Researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography have discovered a new species of seadragon. Until now there were believed to be only two species of seadragon and this latest discovery has got researchers buzzing at the possibilities. This new species is being called the Ruby Seadragon and has been given the scientific name of Phyllopteryx dewyse and is only found off the southern coast of Australia.
The ruby seadragon gets its name from its distinctive coloring and researchers think that the coloring evolved as camouflage as it lives in deeper water than its two relatives. This may be why it has been missed in the past. More information is published with Royal Society Open Science.
